ABSTRACT

The Japan's greenhouse gases observing satellite (GOSAT) observes the atmospheric CO2 change for a decade. JAXA EORC provides the GOSAT tropospheric partial column product V2 from 2009 up to 2021 by using both SWIR and TIR spectra. The CO2 enhancement derived from the tropospheric partial column product has demonstrated the change detection over urban cities by the COVID-19 effect. The CO2 partial column product has a potential for better quantifying urban CO2 flux.

ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought difficulties to our daily lives and caused various changes in socio-economic activities and the natural environment. To monitor and record the changes in socio-economic activities and the environment before and during the COVID-19 pandemic, JAXA has collaborated with NASA and ESA in developing a trilateral dashboard to provide socio-economic activities and natural environmental change information derived from earth observation data. JAXA also has analyzed Earth observation data, for example, ALOS-2, GCOM-C, GOSAT and GOSAT-2 and opened at a special website “JAXA for Earth on COVID-19” in the categories of airports, industry, shipping, agriculture, greenhouse gasses and water quality. © 2021 IEEE.

ABSTRACT

To track atmospheric CO2 changes resulting from the lockdowns, observations collected by the NASA Orbiting Carbon Observatory-2 (OCO-2) satellite and Japan's Greenhouse gases Observing SATellite (GOSAT) in 2020 were compared to results collected in previous years. The OCO-2 results were used to search for changes on regional scales over the globe. Targeted observations from GOSAT were used to track changes in large urban areas, such as Beijing and Tokyo. Both types of observations yielded key insights into the CO2 changes accompanying the economic disruptions caused by the COVID-19 lockdowns. ESA, NASA and JAXA developed the dashboard jointly to monitor the climate impacts of COVID-19. © 2021 IEEE
